Choose the story before the cover
For Mother's Day, start with the dishes she taught you and invite relatives to add the notes they remember. For a wedding, ask both families for a few recipes that belong at the new table. A short collection with clear instructions and names beside each recipe is easier to cook from than a large book of unfinished pages.
Gather the recipe text, a photo if you have one, and the person who shared it. Then decide whether the gift should be a book to keep updating or a print-ready copy for the occasion. You can start collecting recipes before choosing a cover or paying for a larger cookbook.
