Printing a Family Cookbook: A Printer-Ready Workflow

Printing a family cookbook comes down to three things: a PDF you have read page by page, a printer who has told you exactly what they need, and one proof copy before the full order. This guide walks through each, for a cookbook kept as a ring binder.

A word on who does what. forever.recipes makes the binder and its print-ready A5 PDF. It does not print, bind or ship. You choose the printer, the paper, the binder and the delivery, and you pay the printer directly.

1. Finish the binder before you export

• Check the cover label: title, subtitle and family name, spelled exactly as they should appear.
• Check recipe order and tabs. A tab with no published recipe is left out of the print.
• Look behind the Drafts tab. Drafts never appear in the PDF, so publish any recipe that should be in this edition.
• Read every quantity, oven temperature and step against the original card or note.
• Confirm that everyone whose recipe, name, handwriting or photo appears is happy to see it printed.
• Write the date or an edition name on the first page, so a later reprint can't be confused with this one.

Fix mistakes in the binder, not in the PDF. The binder is the source; every PDF you download comes from it, so a correction made there is in every future copy.

2. Inspect the PDF as its own file

Download the PDF from the binder's Share panel, save it, then open the saved file. Page through it from the cover to the last page at normal size, then zoomed in on photos and small text. Look for a recipe that runs onto a second page (it should say "continued"), blank Notes pages where you expected them, and photos that are too dark to print well.

On the free plan each page carries a small "Made with forever.recipes" footer; Forever Club ($3.90 a week, $9.90 a month or $89.90 a year) removes it. 3. Ask the printer before you order

Obtain current specifications from your chosen printer before you order: every printer has its own. Don't copy a bleed, resolution or paper number from an article (this one included) and assume it fits. Adobe's bleed reference explains what bleed and trim are and also tells you to check with the print provider. Ask:

• Can you print A5 pages? A5 is half of an A4 sheet and a little narrower and longer than half-letter; in the US it is not a standard size, so ask whether they print on larger paper and trim.
• Do you need bleed or crop marks for this file, or can you print it as supplied?
• Which paper weight do you suggest for pages that will be turned often in a kitchen?
• Can you punch the pages to match my binder? Bring the binder, or its ring spacing.
• Can I see one printed proof before the full run, and how long does each step take?

4. Choose the binder and paper

Buy the ring binder first, so the printer can punch to match it. An A5 ring binder holds the pages at their own size; in the US, a mini binder made for half-letter pages is close, but check that A5 pages fit before you order. Heavier paper survives kitchen use better than standard copy paper, and page protectors keep the most-cooked recipes clean. Tab dividers can be printed or store-bought.

5. Proof one copy, then print the rest

• Write down what the proof should confirm: colors of photos, text size, page order, punching.
• Check it in the binder, in the kitchen, at arm's length.
• Send corrections through the printer's own process, and download a fresh PDF from the binder after any change.
• Keep the approved PDF with a clear name, such as family-cookbook-2026-12.pdf.

Keep the binder growing

The online binder stays editable after printing. When a new recipe arrives, add it as a sheet, download the PDF again and print only the new pages: they clip in behind their tab. That is the advantage of a binder over a bound book.
